The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) secondary side coolant salt, primarily targeting universities, companies, or organizations interested in its applications in nuclear reactors. There is a renewed focus on advanced reactor technology, particularly molten salt reactors (MSRs) which utilize molten salt for cooling, with specific interest in salt properties, infrastructure development, and related technologies. The MSRE, operated from 1965 to 1969, provided valuable research into liquid-fuel MSRs and produced approximately 2000 kg of FLiBe salt, which is now available for potential applications in reactor operations or experiments. Prospective applicants must detail their intended uses of the FLiBe salt, demonstrate the benefits to the U.S. nuclear industry, identify any technical challenges, and provide information on their capabilities to manage the material. Responses must be submitted via email, including specific contact details and a clear title for their proposal. The DOE does not plan to provide funding for costs associated with material acquisition or processing, and compliance with regulations on proprietary information is required. This EOI serves as a preliminary step to gauge interest before any further proposals or funding opportunities are initiated.
