The Department of Defense (DoD) is seeking proposals for the development and scale production of biosynthetic materials for environmentally friendly, omniphobic technologies for DoD clothing and equipment without the use of fluorine or perfluorinated compounds (PFAS). PFAS compounds, which are associated with health issues, are being banned worldwide. The DoD is looking for biosynthetic alternatives that can provide durable omniphobicity equivalent to those obtained using PFAS. The biosynthetic solution should target textile-based systems, food packaging, and/or protective clothing items. The Phase I of the project requires a feasibility assessment and proof of concept demonstration of the biosynthetic solution. Phase II involves prototype development and scalability of the technology. Phase III focuses on commercialization and dual-use applications. The technology developed could have applications in the civilian sector, including the high-end outdoor retail clothing industry and protective personal equipment for first responders and healthcare workers. The deadline for proposal submission is June 12, 2024. For more information, visit the solicitation link.
