The Department of Defense (DOD) is seeking proposals for the topic of "Machine Vision Work Assistance" as part of their SBIR 24.1 BAA solicitation. The Air Force branch is specifically interested in this topic. The objective is to develop a machine vision system that can observe interfaces in various poses and extract data from them, allowing maintainers to gather data for reference and logging. The system should include a no code tool for maintainers to train the system on a small number of example pictures. The machine vision utility will integrate with other work tracking tools to record and reference the data. The DOD is also interested in developing AI and ML capabilities for AR/VR systems to support work as it is performed. They require a framework to capture multidimensional data from AR/VR systems and integrate it into cloud-based storage concepts. The framework should be adaptable to new AR/VR systems as they develop. Additionally, the DOD is interested in developing a Safety Assistant AI that can alert maintainers to observable hazards via an AR system, as well as a Work Recognition AI that can recognize completed work and assist with logging or proceeding to the next step. The solicitation is currently closed, and the proposal submission deadline was February 21, 2024. The project will progress through Phase II, where in-depth research and development will be conducted to create a full-scale prototype. Phase III will focus on exploring military and commercial applications and evaluating the developed capability in operational environments. Relevant keywords for this solicitation include machine learning, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, computer vision, and data analytics.
