The Department of Defense (DOD) is seeking proposals for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program focused on the development of a GHz burst mode ultrashort pulse laser. The Air Force Research Laboratory is specifically interested in the development of robust, compact, extreme repetition rate, high per pulse energy ultrashort pulse lasers with pulse on demand capability. The desired system should have a tunable rep-rate and two operational modes: one that is externally trigger-able to sub-millisecond timing that yields a series of bursts, and another that allows the system to continuously fire bursts at 1 Hz or better for up to several seconds. The system should be compact, scalable, and maintainable by non-specialists. Phase I of the program will involve designing and specifying the components needed for the system, while Phase II will focus on building and improving the prototype. If successful, Phase III funding may be sought to further develop and acquire a compact, ruggedized, and commercially available laser system. The deadline for proposal submission is June 12, 2024.
