The Department of Defense (DOD) is seeking proposals for their SBIR 24.1 BAA solicitation. The specific topic of the solicitation is "Novel Metal and Ceramic Based Coatings for Military Applications" and is being conducted by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The objective of the project is to develop a domestic source that can produce industrial quantities of high corrosion and wear resistance, self-lubricating, low friction, and thermally stable coatings for various military applications such as hypersonics, gun barrels, and missile launchers. The DLA is interested in reducing foreign reliance and single points of failure by establishing a competitive domestic supply chain. The project duration and cost are as follows: Phase I should not exceed 6 months and $100,000, while Phase II should not exceed 18 months and $1,000,000. The proposals should focus on increasing production capacity, affordability, and supply chain resiliency for coating techniques and processing. The selected efforts should demonstrate a degree of risk and be at a Technology and/or Manufacturing Readiness Level (TRL/MRL) 6 or less. The ideal production process should be modular and scalable. Phase III does not have specific funding associated with it, but successful projects should result in the ability to produce for DOD orders and organic business growth.
