The Department of Defense (DOD) is seeking proposals for portable test equipment for Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) Optical Interconnects. The technology within this topic is restricted under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulation (EAR). The objective is to develop a portable light source and an optical power meter capable of simultaneously measuring the optical power in optical fiber cable at multiple wavelengths in the range of 850 nm to 1500 nm. The Navy is specifically interested in advancements in optical receiver designs that leverage novel photo-detector technology, semiconductor process technology, circuit designs, architectures, and packaging and integration techniques. The project will involve a Phase I to design the optical system and instrumentation, a Phase II to finalize the design and develop prototypes, and a Phase III to collaborate with defense avionics industries and support equipment companies for transition to production. The commercial sector, including telecommunication systems, fiber-optic networks, and data centers, will benefit from the development of portable WDM-based test equipment. The solicitation is open until June 12, 2024. For more information, visit the solicitation link.
