The Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) is offering a funding opportunity titled "Stimulate Utilization of Plentiful Energy in Rocks through High-temperature Original Technologies SBIR/STTR (SUPERHOT SBIR/STTR)" aimed at advancing geothermal energy production from superhot reservoirs. This initiative seeks to develop innovative technologies for well design and construction, as well as improved heat extraction methods, to enable the efficient and sustainable production of baseload power from geothermal resources exceeding 375 °C and 22 MPa. The program is critical for enhancing the U.S. energy security by tapping into the vast geothermal potential estimated at 15,000 gigawatts, with a goal of achieving a levelized cost of electricity below $30 per megawatt hour by 2040. Approximately $30 million in funding is available, with an expected 5-15 grants to be awarded, and applications must be submitted through the ARPA-E eXCHANGE platform by February 19, 2025. For further inquiries, applicants can contact ARPA-E at ARPA-E-CO@hq.doe.gov.
