Red Sea Initiative Request for Information
Active
Egypt USAID-Cairo
The Red Sea Initiative (RSI) is a potential activity that USAID/Egypt is considering implementing in the future. The goal of the RSI is to conserve the Red Sea coral reef and its ecosystem to promote sustainable development in Egypt. The Red Sea coral reef is a world treasure but is facing threats such as over-development, poor boating practices, overfishing, plastics, and pollution. The RSI aims to protect and restore the coral reef ecosystem through a long-term, well-funded, and broad-based solution. The program will provide significant financing for an independent conservation funding vehicle, which will support the coral reef ecosystem, business models with positive impacts on coral reef and marine ecosystems, and sustainable community development in the Red Sea area. USAID proposes a contribution of up to $15 million of grant funding, with the aim of attracting an additional $50 million from other sources. The RSI will collaborate with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) to design and implement the program. The RSI aligns with the Government of Egypt's strategies and initiatives for climate change, conservation, and sustainable tourism. The program will support a long-term Conservation Vehicle that will promote a concerted response to protect and preserve the coral reefs and coastal ecosystem in Egypt. It will also facilitate green investment through small grants and blended finance to support preservation efforts. USAID will collaborate with UNDP to design the program and identify potential partners and contributors. Organizations interested in supporting the RSI can contact the grantor's representative for more information.
