Intra-Satellite Communications

The Navy seeks to develop a hardware solution for intra-satellite communication (ISC) within commercial satellite constellations to improve the tracking of open ocean targets. The current system relies on individual satellites communicating with ground stations, leading to latency and inefficiencies in tracking mobile targets. The proposed hardware will enable direct communication between satellites, facilitating seamless target handoff, enhancing tracking accuracy and persistence, and reducing data transfer latency. The solution must provide real-time communication, improve data correlation from multiple viewpoints, ensure persistent tracking in challenging environments, and establish a dynamic inter-satellite network. Phase I focuses on concept development and feasibility through modeling, while Phase II involves prototype development and testing. Phase III will transition the technology for wartime use and explore dual-use applications in various sectors, including law enforcement and marine wildlife protection. This project is restricted under ITAR/EAR, and work may become classified in Phase II, requiring U.S. ownership and security clearances.
