Colloidal Nanocrystals for Improved Mid-Wave Infrared Imaging
STTR Opportunity Analysis
The Department of the Navy is seeking a novel colloidal nanocrystal-based photo-detector technology to improve mid-wave infrared imaging under the STTR program. Awardees must develop a photo-diode technology based on colloidal nanocrystal materials suitable for direct deposition onto silicon/silicon dioxide read-out integrated circuits, which eliminates the traditional, costly bonding process. Key technical goals include achieving a five-fold increase in photoluminescence quantum yield at 5 micrometers, demonstrating compatibility with electrical readouts, and proving suitability for pixel sizes of 20 micrometers or less. Phase I focuses on concept feasibility through analysis, modeling, or prototyping, while Phase II requires the fabrication and delivery of prototype detectors to the US Naval Research Laboratory. Proposals must be submitted through the DoD SBIR/STTR portal by the application deadline of June 24, 2026, at 4:00 PM Eastern Time.
