Novel Ignition Systems for multi-pulse Solid Propellant Rocket Motors
STTR Opportunity Analysis
The Missile Defense Agency is seeking proposals under the STTR program to develop a reliable, lightweight, and multi-pulse ignition system for solid propellant rocket motors. The selected contractor must design a single-hardware ignition system capable of multiple ignitions, reducing overall mass compared to conventional pyrogen or pyrotechnic systems and eliminating the need for sensitive pyrotechnic initiators. Technical requirements include utilizing reduced smoke propellant grains to generate stable combustion gases, operating within the power limits of commercially available thermal batteries, and meeting a Level 1 Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC). The solicitation opens on July 22, 2026, and applications are due by August 19, 2026, with technical inquiries directed to Kevin Krueger at kevin.krueger@mda.mil and Kayla Kryzak at kayla.r.kryzak.civ@mail.mil.
