Novel Ignition Systems for multi-pulse Solid Propellant Rocket Motors
STTR Opportunity Analysis
The Missile Defense Agency is seeking proposals under the Small Business Innovation Research program to develop a reliable, lightweight, multi-pulse ignition system for solid propellant rocket motors. The selected contractor must design a single-hardware ignition system capable of multiple ignitions using reduced-smoke propellant grains while eliminating sensitive pyrotechnic initiators. Technical requirements demand that the system minimize weight compared to conventional igniters, support diverse propellant compositions, and limit power consumption to the capabilities of commercially available thermal batteries. The opportunity is restricted under ITAR and EAR regulations and carries a Level 1 CMMC requirement. Proposals must be submitted by August 19, 2026, and technical inquiries can be directed to Kevin Krueger at kevin.krueger@mda.mil or Kayla Kryzak at kayla.r.kryzak.civ@mail.mil.
