Novel Ignition Systems for multi-pulse Solid Propellant Rocket Motors
STTR Opportunity Analysis
The Missile Defense Agency is seeking proposals under the STTR program to develop a reliable, lightweight ignition system for solid propellant rocket motors capable of multiple ignitions with a single set of hardware. The project requires designing an ignition system that generates stable combustion gases from reduced-smoke propellant grains in Phase I, and developing a physical system in Phase II that reduces mass compared to conventional pyrotechnic igniters and operates within commercial battery power limits. This defense technology falls under weapons and hypersonics modernization priorities, requires a Level 1 CMMC, and is subject to ITAR and EAR regulations. The solicitation is scheduled to open on July 22, 2026, and proposals must be submitted by August 19, 2026, with technical inquiries directed to Kevin Krueger and Kayla Kryzak.
