Novel Ignition Systems for multi-pulse Solid Propellant Rocket Motors

This Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) solicitation, designated under topic MDA26TZ04-NV001, seeks proposals to develop a reliable, lightweight, and multi-pulse ignition system for solid propellant rocket motors. Managed under the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) with a Level 1 CMMC requirement, this defense technology falls under the weapons and hypersonics modernization priorities and is restricted under ITAR and EAR regulations. Currently, multi-pulse solid rocket motors rely on separate, heavy pyrotechnic or pyrogen igniters for each pulse, which increases system weight and the risk of inadvertent initiation. The objective of this project is to develop alternative ignition hardware capable of multiple ignitions using a single system, thereby eliminating sensitive initiators, reducing overall mass, and allowing more flexible propellant usage. The project will progress through three phases: - **Phase I:** Design an ignition system utilizing reduced smoke propellant grains to generate stable combustion gases, maximizing the use of commercial subcomponents and validating models. - **Phase II:** Develop and demonstrate the single-hardware ignition system across various propellant compositions, ensuring it reduces mass compared to conventional igniters, meets specific motor rise times, and operates within the power limits of commercial thermal batteries. - **Phase III:** Partner with prime contractors or propulsion suppliers to build and integrate the system into solid propellant rockets based on specified free volumes and rise times.
