Waste Heat Recovery
STTR Opportunity Analysis
The Navy is seeking an STTR solution to recover waste heat from DDG 51 class ship LM 2500 main engine exhaust and convert it into electrical power. The work calls for a low-cost, durable system that can capture thermal energy while minimizing impacts to ship systems, engine operation, space, weight, stability, and radar cross section. Phase I focuses on concept development, feasibility, stress and scalability analysis, validation and test planning, and recommendations for how the technology could be integrated into DDG 51 ships; Phase II calls for a prototype or high-fidelity simulation, an installation plan, and an estimate of electrical output across operating conditions. The opportunity is open under solicitation DON26TZ01-NV006 / 26.TZ, with applications due June 3, 2026 at 16:00 UTC.
