Flameless Ration Heater Alternative (Magnesium-Free)

The DLA26BZ02-NV003 SBIR program seeks to develop a magnesium-free flameless ration heater (FRH) for military use. The current magnesium-based FRH poses fire and explosion hazards due to hydrogen gas production, is classified as hazardous waste, and relies on a vulnerable foreign supply chain. The objective is to create a safe, cost-effective, environmentally benign, and domestically sourced alternative that meets or exceeds current FRH performance without producing flammable gases. Phase I focuses on feasibility, including bench-scale design, performance validation, and a preliminary Techno-Economic and Lifecycle Analysis. Phase II aims for pilot-scale production, demonstration models, cost validation, and a transition plan for full-scale integration into the DLA supply chain. Phase III involves dual-use applications and organic business growth.
