Flameless Ration Heater Alternative (Magnesium-Free)
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The Defense Logistics Agency is seeking an SBIR solution for a magnesium-free flameless ration heater for military rations. The goal is to replace the current magnesium-based heater with a domestically sourced alternative that is safe, cost-effective, environmentally benign, and able to meet or exceed current heating performance without producing flammable gases. Phase I focuses on feasibility and bench-scale validation, including system design, parametric testing, a preliminary techno-economic and lifecycle analysis, a pilot-scale design-ready package, and a transition plan for Phase II. Phase II calls for a pilot-scale manufacturing process, product demonstration models for evaluation by the U.S. Army DEVCOM Soldier Center and DLA Troop Support, a validated cost model, and a plan for full-scale production integration into the DLA supply chain. The solicitation is open, and applications are due June 24, 2026 at 4:00 PM UTC.
