Domestic Production of Plant-based Carbon Fiber Precursors in Support of Hypersonic Applications
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The Department of Defense, through the Department of the Navy, is seeking proposals under SBIR topic DON26BZ04-NV066 to develop an environmentally friendly, domestic processing method for plant-based carbon fiber precursors used in hypersonic thermal protection systems. Phase I requires demonstrating a proof of concept for processing cellulose or lignin into fiber precursors that meet EPA effluent standards, while Phase II involves weaving, carbonizing, and characterizing fabric prototypes. Because subsequent project phases are expected to become classified, participating contractors must be U.S. owned and operated, secure a Secret-level facility clearance, and meet Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification Level 2 requirements. Proposals must be submitted through the Department of Defense SBIR portal, with the application window open from July 22, 2026, until the closing deadline on August 19, 2026.
