Survivable & Affordable Lens Technology (SALT)
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The Department of Defense, through the Office of the Secretary of Defense SBIR program, is seeking proposals to investigate the viability of using low-cost alkali-halide optical materials as alternatives to traditional, expensive military-grade infrared optics for attritable unmanned drone vehicles. Phase I requires optical design exercises, high-volume manufacturability analysis, shelf-life projections, and costing comparisons, while Phase II involves manufacturing hardware demonstration units, implementing passive athermalization, and validating moisture-resistant coatings. The primary technical focus is on applying these materials to uncooled thermal infrared sensors, such as the Odd Systems Kurbas-640, while ensuring the lens assemblies can withstand moisture and water damage per military standards. Proposals must be submitted between July 22, 2026, and the closing deadline of August 19, 2026.
