Gun Weapon Systems Ammunition Handling and Controls Modernization
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The Navy, through the DoD SBIR program, is seeking an SBIR solution to modernize Gun Weapon Systems ammunition handling and controls for the MK 34 / MK 45 5-inch gun system. The work calls for an electro-mechanical capability for sustained tactical loading and unloading of 5-inch/54 caliber naval ammunition, including concept development in Phase I and prototype development, land-based testing, and delivery in Phase II. The solution must fit the MK 45 system’s size, weight, and power profile without modifying the ship, use Model-Based Engineering design principles, and aim for operational availability of 0.9 or greater, sustained loading above 12 rounds per minute, and reduced exposure to petroleum-based hydraulic fluids; Phase II work may be classified and the contractor must meet the stated foreign influence and clearance-related restrictions. The opportunity is in pre-release status, with release on June 3, 2026, opening on June 24, 2026, and a submission deadline of July 22, 2026 at 4:00 PM UTC.
