Safe Falling and Failing For Humanoid Robots
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The United States Air Force is seeking proposals for the Direct-to-Phase II SBIR initiative to develop a safe falling system for humanoid robots. Awardees must design a comprehensive system consisting of software algorithms, hardware, or both, that enables robots to autonomously detect imminent falls, react in real-time to minimize impact forces, and recover gracefully. The final solution must remain lightweight, function across various fall heights and orientations, and ultimately integrate onto an existing humanoid robot platform to achieve a technology readiness level of 7 or 8. Because this technology is restricted under ITAR and EAR regulations, offerors must disclose any proposed use of foreign nationals. Proposals for this opportunity can be submitted starting June 24, 2026, through the close date of July 22, 2026.
