Nickel Molybdenum Hard Chrome Alternative
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The Department of Defense, through AFWERX, is seeking proposals to advance a nickel molybdenum plating alternative to traditional hard chrome plating in aerospace applications such as landing gear actuators. The work requires developing and validating the Maxterial H-max formulation to phase out hazardous hexavalent chromium, with key deliverables including fatigue testing, performance evaluation data, scalability validation, and a transition plan. This Direct-to-Phase-II effort aims to advance the technology from Readiness Level 4 to 7 or 8 to help meet Department of War mandates to eliminate hexavalent chromium in Army facilities by 2030 and Navy facilities by 2039. The opportunity is restricted under export control laws, opens on June 24, 2026, and has an application deadline of July 22, 2026.
