The Department of Defense (DOD) is seeking proposals for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I program. The specific topic of the solicitation is "Modeling Tools for Army Vehicle (tanks and rotorcraft) Mobility Applications". The objective of this topic is to incorporate new mathematical constructs and high-fidelity design tools to predict fluid-structure interactions of Army vehicles. The United States Army has a critical need to understand and optimize flight characteristics across various mobility applications, including gas-turbine engine flow and heat transfer analysis. The Army is looking to develop high-fidelity, computationally efficient solvers for the aerodynamic analysis and design of vehicles ranging from rotary-wing aircraft to medium/long-range hypersonic projectiles. The Phase I effort will assess effective unstructured IGA discretization and mesh refinement tools, advanced IGA mesh moving tools, tools for fluid mechanics and FSI simulations, and visualization tools. The Phase II effort will focus on developing the mid-processing tools identified in Phase I. The Phase III dual-use applications involve collaborating with model and software developers to integrate the products into a Long-Range Precision Fires application and optimizing the toolset for high-speed weapons in anti-access/area-denial environments. The technology will be transitioned to an appropriate government agency or prime defense contractor for integration and testing. The solicitation is open until June 12, 2024. For more information, visit the SBIR topic link or the solicitation agency website.
