DIRECT TO PHASE II: AI/ML Assisted Field Troubleshooting in Avionics Optical Network

The DON26BZ01-DV042 project seeks to develop a portable AI/ML-enabled diagnostic module for in-field troubleshooting of avionics optical networks. This module will be compatible with existing Optical Backscattering Reflectometer (OBR) and Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) mainframes, supporting high-speed communication systems in military aircraft. The objective is to overcome limitations of traditional test equipment, providing centimeter-level fault detection accuracy for issues like fiber breaks and link degradation. Key capabilities include AI-augmented fault detection, AI-driven virtual assistants with AR interfaces, advanced troubleshooting metrics, and plug-and-play integration with various fiber types. The device will be ruggedized for military environments, supporting SWDM and CWDM wavelengths and operating in extreme temperatures. Phase II focuses on prototyping and validating a functional module, while Phase III targets dual-use applications in defense avionics and commercial telecommunication systems.
