High Energy Density Synthetic Fuel Development
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The Department of Defense, specifically the Navy, is seeking proposals for the development of high energy density synthetic fuels through its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The primary objective is to create a scalable process for synthesizing a novel liquid hydrocarbon fuel or a synthetic fuel blend that exceeds the volumetric energy density of JP-10 while maintaining specific physical properties, including a flashpoint above 60 °C and viscosity below 200 cSt at -40 °C. This initiative is critical for enhancing the range of gas turbine powered cruise missiles and may also have applications in rocket propulsion and other dual-use scenarios. Interested parties should note that the solicitation is currently in the pre-release phase, with the official opening date set for January 8, 2025, and proposals due by February 5, 2025.
