Event-Based Sensing Hardware and Algorithms for Navigation

This Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) solicitation seeks the development of an innovative, low size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) event-based sensing navigation solution. Designed to operate in hostile flight and space environments, including low-earth orbit and high-speed flights, the system must function independently of GPS or GNSS inputs. The proposed technology will utilize advanced neural network models and event-driven data to process environmental changes and mission-specific stimuli in real time. Operating synergistically with existing inertial navigation systems (INS), the solution aims to enhance decision-making, adaptive navigation, and situational awareness for kill vehicles and satellites. Performance benchmarks require the system to meet or exceed current GPS accuracy standards. The project will progress through three phases: Phase I focuses on initial design, modeling, and testing of the event-based visual navigation concepts. Phase II involves developing a functional prototype on representative hardware and demonstrating GPS-free navigation in an operational environment. Phase III targets the production and flight-testing of a space-ready prototype that integrates seamlessly with existing MDA platforms. Due to the defense-related nature of this microelectronics and sensor technology, the project is restricted under International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR), requiring a Projected CMMC Level 1 certification.
