The Department of Defense (DOD) is seeking proposals for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program focused on the topic of "Soft Robot for Locomotion in Granular Seabed Media". The objective of this research is to develop a soft robot capable of untethered, autonomous locomotion within granular media in shallow sea-floor environments. The robot should be able to operate with an onboard power source and control system, allowing for up to 2 hours of movement and 72 hours of stationary sensing. It should be capable of movement within submerged sand up to a depth of 1 meter and horizontal movement up to 10 meters on a single battery charge. The technology has potential applications in surveying underwater soil regions, detecting buried mines, locating buried wires, seabed sensing, communication, and ISR roles. The project will be conducted in three phases: Phase I involves a feasibility study and design plan, Phase II focuses on prototype development and testing, and Phase III involves field testing and dual-use applications. The technology has dual-use potential for seabed geotechnical measurements, geology, oceanography, and fisheries. The solicitation is closed, and more information can be found on the DOD SBIR/STTR Opportunities website.
