Modeling of Magnetic Properties of High Strength Steels

The Department of Defense, specifically the Navy, is seeking proposals for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program focused on the modeling of magnetic properties of high strength steels. The objective is to develop physics-based material models that enhance the understanding and prediction of stress-induced hysteretic magnetic behavior in these steels, which is critical for designing effective magnetic signature reduction systems for Navy vessels. This research is particularly important due to the complex stresses and magnetic state changes experienced by submarines, which can lead to nonlinear magnetic signatures that are currently addressed through empirical methods lacking a solid physics foundation.
