Modernization of Flash X-Ray Simulated Environments
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The U.S. Air Force is seeking Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR solutions to modernize flash x-ray simulated environments by repurposing the CXS and PI 538 systems into two new test capabilities with different output profiles. The work requires offsite assessment of both machines, redesign of the CXS as a cold x-ray source, modification of the PI 538 to shorten pulse width, and evaluation of components that could be replaced with higher-performance materials to improve operating time and reduce maintenance. Key technical context includes preserving or improving x-ray machine design performance through modeling and simulation, with the CXS and PI 538 efforts currently at TRL 6 and expected to reach TRL 8 by the end of Phase II; transport of the PI 538 also requires special handling of dielectric oil. The application is due June 24, 2026 at 4:00 PM UTC, and no Phase I awards will be made under this topic.
