Modernization of Flash X-Ray Simulated Environments

The DAF26BZ02-DV013 project aims to modernize flash x-ray simulated environments by designing and building two new flash x-ray test capabilities. This Direct-to-Phase-II (D2P2) topic focuses on repurposing existing CXS and PI 538 flash x-ray machines. The CXS will be redesigned as a cold x-ray source, and the PI 538 will be modified to reduce its Full-Width-Half-Max (FWMH) pulse width. The project also involves evaluating components for material replacement to increase operational time and reduce maintenance. Both technologies are currently at TRL 6 and are expected to reach TRL 8 upon Phase II completion. Phase II includes offsite assessment, component evaluation, and modeling and simulation to achieve technical objectives. Upon completion, these modernized machines will support nuclear modernization test and evaluation work, with dual-use applications in component testing for nuclear hardness and survivability, as well as potential applications in cargo screening at ports of entry.
