Domestic Production of Refractory Powders for Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics and Aerospace Alloys
SBIR Opportunity Analysis
The Defense Logistics Agency is seeking SBIR solutions to establish wholly domestic capability for producing high-purity refractory powders for aerospace alloys and ultra-high temperature ceramics used in defense platforms. The work focuses on recycling and producing refractory metals, carbides, and borides containing materials such as Hf, Zr, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W, with emphasis on well-characterized powders that can support industrial-scale supply. Preference is given to novel, modular, and scalable processes that improve affordability and supply chain resiliency, and the effort should fall within TRL/MRL 3 through 6; the topic also falls under ITAR and EAR, with foreign national involvement requiring disclosure. Phase I is limited to 12 months and $100,000, and the opportunity is scheduled to open May 27, 2026 and close June 24, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. EDT.
