Engineering Biological and Biomedical Systems (EBBS)

The U.S. National Science Foundation’s Engineering Biological and Biomedical Systems (EBBS) program funds research that expands understanding of biological and physiological systems and supports advances that can improve human health. The program seeks fundamental engineering studies that combine experimental and computational approaches to develop biosensing platforms, imaging and modulation strategies, bioreactors, tissues, organs, and other biological or biomedical systems. It also supports work on microbial populations, cells, therapeutic cells and tissues, biomanufacturing, rehabilitation engineering, and engineering principles for biological systems that sense and respond to novel stimuli, while excluding projects centered on drug design, drug delivery, animal disease models, therapy validation, clinical trials, or commercialization.
