The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has announced the availability of up to $1,000,000 in grant funds for education and training programs related to mine safety. MSHA is particularly interested in supporting programs that emphasize training on miners' statutory rights, such as the right to a safe and healthy working environment, the right to refuse an unsafe task, and the right to have a voice in safety and health conditions at the mine. Special emphasis will be given to programs and materials that target smaller and underserved mines and miners in the mining industry, with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
Eligible applicants for these grants include states, territories, tribal governments, and private or public nonprofit entities. MSHA may award up to 20 grants, with each individual grant ranging from a minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of $1,000,000.
The purpose of these grants is to improve working conditions and create safer environments for workers in the mining community. The grant funds can be used to establish and implement education and training programs, create training materials and programs, or both.
It is important to note that the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) requires the Secretary of Labor to prioritize mine safety demonstrations and pilot projects with broad applicability.
