Grant Opportunity Analysis

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is offering a funding opportunity titled "Impact of Initial Influenza Exposure on Immunity in Infants" through a cooperative agreement mechanism. This initiative aims to establish or continue longitudinal infant cohorts to investigate how initial and repeated natural influenza infections and vaccinations influence immune responses, ultimately guiding the development of effective influenza vaccines. The program has an estimated total funding of $9.6 million for fiscal year 2027, with individual awards capped at $3 million per year for up to five years, and is open to a diverse range of applicants, including domestic and foreign organizations. Interested parties should submit their applications by June 4, 2026, and can direct inquiries to imprintingNOFO@mail.nih.gov for further information.

AI Summary
The Department of Health and Human Services is reissuing a funding opportunity (RFA-AI-27-019) for research into how initial influenza exposure shapes immunity in infants. The goal is to establish or continue longitudinal infant cohorts to understand the immune responses to natural infections and vaccinations, ultimately informing the design of durable, broadly protective influenza vaccines. The project, which is a cooperative agreement, will commit $9.6 million in FY 2027 to fund 2-4 awards, each with a maximum budget of $3 million direct costs per year for up to five years. Eligible applicants include a wide range of organizations, including higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profits, and government entities, both domestic and foreign. The NOFO emphasizes multi-disciplinary prospective studies and immunological research, focusing on the impact of repeated exposures on immunity and comparing immune mechanisms elicited by vaccination versus natural infection. Clinical trials are not allowed; however, clinical research and research using human samples are permitted. Applicants must adhere to strict submission guidelines, including detailed plans for administration, data stewardship, clinical management, and an Opportunity Fund.
