The National Institutes of Health Office of the Director is seeking applications for the NIH Director's Transformative Research Award to support groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, and unconventional biomedical research. Applicants must propose individual or collaborative team projects with the potential to create new scientific paradigms, establish novel clinical approaches, or develop transformative technologies across basic, translational, or clinical research. The award features a unique three-phase peer review process that evaluates applications primarily on the significance and transformative potential of the research rather than on preliminary data, with projects allowed a performance period of up to five years. Eligible domestic organizations must submit their electronic applications by the deadline of September 3, 2026, for this funding opportunity which anticipates awarding approximately $8 million across seven awards in fiscal year 2027.
