Emergency Department Alternatives to Opioids Program
Grant Opportunity Analysis
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is offering the Emergency Department Alternatives to Opioids Program federal grant to establish and implement practices that develop alternatives to pharmacological opioid interventions. Awardees are required to implement protocols that reduce the potential harmful consequences of opioid use for pain care in hospitals and emergency departments, thereby promoting safer pain treatment and reducing future misuse. Eligibility is statutorily limited to hospitals and emergency departments, including freestanding and rural facilities, with priority consideration given to applicants from states without current grantees to ensure geographic distribution. The agency expects to make approximately nine awards for this fiscal year 2027 opportunity, with an estimated award date of September 30, 2027.
