Grant Opportunity Analysis

The National Institutes of Health, through HHS, is offering the Bioengineering Research Grants (BRG) R01 Clinical Trial Optional grant to support multidisciplinary bioengineering research that addresses biomedical problems. The program is intended to integrate, optimize, validate, translate, or otherwise accelerate promising tools, methods, and techniques for specific basic, translational, or clinical research and practice needs, including design-directed, developmental, discovery-driven, or hypothesis-driven projects. It supports small-team integrative research and allows clinical trials only when they test functionality or validate performance in the chosen setting; Phase III trials and conventional trials without translation as the primary motivation are not supported. Awards are limited to five years with budgets under $500,000 in direct costs per year, and applications are due October 5, 2026, with required registration and submission procedures.
