BRAIN Initiative: Exploratory Research Opportunities Using Invasive Neural Recording and Stimulating Technologies in the Human Brain (R61 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The National Institutes of Health, through HHS, is seeking grant applications for the BRAIN Initiative’s exploratory research program on invasive neural recording and stimulation technologies in the human brain. The opportunity supports exploratory, early-stage projects that use direct access during invasive surgical procedures to study how neuronal activity in human brain networks relates to sensations, perceptions, emotions, thoughts, memories, and behavior, with an emphasis on building feasibility for future research grant applications. Projects are expected to be multidisciplinary, avoid clinical trials, address neuroethical considerations, and participate in a NIH-coordinated consortium to help establish standards, collect data for ancillary studies, and standardize dissemination; the maximum project period is three years.
