The Department of the Navy’s NSWC Crane is seeking a prototype hypervelocity improved capability assault rifle, or HICAR, for USSOCOM as a replacement or upgrade to the current URG-I carbine. The effort is focused on developing a weapon system that can reliably fire standard 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition and future hypervelocity rounds while improving effective range, durability, and interoperability with existing SOCOM accessories. Key requirements include compatibility with the M4A1 lower receiver group without permanent modification, an 11- to 12-inch barrel, use of the specified HUXWRX Flow 556k L In “Black Magic” suppressor for testing, and successful completion of shoot, safety, user, verification, and operational testing.
