MMW Chiller for Balance of Plant

NREL seeks an outdoor air-cooled MMW Chiller system with a minimum 30-ton cooling capacity for its Multi-Megawatt electrolyzer project by March 2026. This chiller will dry hydrogen produced by a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer by cooling glycol to condense water from the hydrogen stream. The system must accommodate variable cooling demands, preferably using R410A refrigerant. Process-side specifications include a 50/50 propylene glycol and water mixture, a flow rate of 90-120 gpm, and an expected fluid temperature of 35-37°F, with supply pressure between 60-100 psi. The chiller must be outdoor-rated (NEMA 3R minimum), operate between 0-95°F and up to 6,000 feet elevation, and survive extreme conditions. It requires 480 VAC 3-phase power, remote on/off control, and OSHA-approved NRTL listing for electrical components. NREL provides process piping and heat exchangers. Two configuration options are presented: two independent chillers or a single chiller with two independent refrigeration loops.
