TECHNOLOGY LICENSING OPPORTUNITY: FortiCoat Steel
Contract Opportunity Analysis
The Department of Energy through Los Alamos National Laboratory is offering a technology licensing opportunity for FortiCoat Steel, a coating process intended to help metal surfaces last longer in harsh environments. The invention combines a recyclable chemical etching step with a nanoparticle-infused polymer coating to improve adhesion and provide durable protection for steel and other metals. The process uses a continuously regenerated oxidizing ion in an electrochemical cell, is described as suitable for difficult-to-coat metals such as stainless steel, and the resulting coating is intended to resist corrosion, wear, salt water, acids, radiation, and surface damage; the work is associated with Los Alamos, New Mexico, and is at TRL 3 with patent pending. Interested parties are directed to contact licensing@lanl.gov for licensing discussions.
